Tradescantia zebrina

Tradescantia zebrina

An amazing, incredibly fast growing plant, with striking silver and purple variegations on its leaves. Known for its ability to grow almost as you are watching it (one of its common names is the “mile a minute” plant), this is also incredibly easy to propagate. Cut off the ends of a few stems, pop them into compost, and they’ll root and create a whole new plant in no time.

Rhaphidophora tetrasperma

Rhaphidophora tetrasperma

A mouthful of a name for one of my absolute favourite plants. A super fast grower, this will climb up your bookshelves (or up a wall with a bit of support) in no time at all. With elegant glossy leaves with distinctive splits (called fenestrations) — this is the first plant you need if you want to create the jungle look indoors…

(12cm pot)

Maranta leuconeura 'Fascinator'

Prayer plant
(Maranta leuconeura ‘Fascinator’)

Known as a prayer plant because its leaves move from a horizontal position to point upwards during the night, this is a seriously unusual plant. The arresting lines on its leaves in greens and delicate pinks are a really distinctive feature. One to be displayed in a prime spot…

(12cm pot)

Pilea peperomioides

Pilea peperomioides

The darling of social media, lovely round-leaved Pilea peperomioides is a huge hit on Instagram.

Not only gorgeous to look at (and photograph) it’s super easy to care for too. And when it’s happy, it makes plenty of “pups” so you can grow pilea babies, and give them away to friends…

(14cm pot)

Philodendron scandens

Philodendron scandens

Probably the most understated plant in this selection, this will be one of the most reliable plants in your house. Growing happily even in less-than-perfect conditions and with less-than-perfect care, Philo scandens can either trail or climb. I personally love to see those little heart shaped leaves dangling downwards on the meandering stems.
